After "Nejdra Nance"--the name she grew up with--was pregnant herself at sixteen, she needed her birth certificate to get aid for pre-natal care, but her mother was elusive about it. Netty--the name she went by--eventually found a paper she thought was her birth certificate, but it turned out to be false.
